Privacy policy
Last updated: 2 November 2026
Sight Step plans round walks from where you are. This policy explains what the app does with your information. In short: there's no account, no advertising and no tracking, and your walks are stored on your iPhone only.
Who is responsible
Sight Step is made by Łukasz Koczwara. You can reach me at hello@sightstep.app.
Your location
Sight Step uses your iPhone's location to plan walks from where you are and to follow you during a walk, including when your phone is locked. To do this, parts of your location leave your phone in three ways:
- Walking routes are calculated by Apple Maps, so the start point and the stops of each loop are sent to Apple. Apple's handling of this is described in Apple's privacy policy.
- Map data for the area around you is downloaded from our map server at tiles.sightstep.app, hosted by Cloudflare. These requests reveal which area of the map you're looking at and, like any internet request, your IP address. Cloudflare may keep technical logs for security and to keep the service running. Sight Step does not combine these requests with anything that identifies you.
- Place information is looked up on Wikipedia when you open a place. This sends the place's name and location to the Wikimedia Foundation.
Sight Step does not store your location on any server, and does not build a history of where you've been anywhere other than on your iPhone (see below).
Your walks and steps
When you finish a walk, Sight Step saves a summary on your iPhone: the route you walked, the distance, time, steps and the places you passed. This history never leaves your phone. You can delete any walk in "Your walks", and deleting the app deletes all of them.
If you allow motion access, Sight Step reads your step count from your iPhone's motion sensor during a walk. Step counts are only used on your phone.
Photos and sharing
Sight Step only adds a picture to your photo library when you choose to save one, and only shares a picture when you choose to share it. It cannot see or read your photos.
Notifications
Notifications about turns and places during a walk are created on your iPhone. No notification service or server is involved.
Saved map data
To make walks load faster, Sight Step keeps up to 100 MB of map data on your iPhone. You can see and clear it in the app under About.
What Sight Step does not do
- It has no user accounts and does not ask for your name, email or other personal details.
- It contains no advertising and no analytics or tracking tools.
- It does not sell or share your information with anyone for marketing.
Emails
If you write to hello@sightstep.app, I'll use your email address and message only to reply, and delete them when they're no longer needed.
Your rights
Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation you have the right to ask what data about you is held, and to have it corrected or deleted. Because Sight Step keeps your walks only on your phone, you control them directly in the app. For anything else, write to hello@sightstep.app. You can also complain to the Polish data protection authority (Prezes Urzędu Ochrony Danych Osobowych, uodo.gov.pl).
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
